MEET JAMI

The Lesson of a Lifetime

My father, an artist, and mother, a school teacher, taught me that hard work is everything in life. But even hard work sometimes isn’t enough. When rising rent pushed us out of this district, I never stopped dreaming that I’d return.

Value of a Hard Day’s Work

At age fifteen, I started working to afford college and law school. From waiting tables in the basement at Bloomingdale’s to pulling double shifts at a gym on 57th Street, I learned the value of determination and grit. I worked through college and law school but it’s the education I received here in this district that I value most.

Experience that Counts

I’ve worked as an attorney and as a policy advisor in the Clinton White House, but it’s my passion for hearing and sharing the stories of real people that’s always meant the most to me. That’s why I left Washington and came home—to amplify the voices of real New Yorkers and their struggles. I’ve spent the last few decades reporting for outlets like CBS News, CNN, MSNBC, Al Jazeera America, PBS, WNYC, and ABC.

Listening to New Yorkers

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from all my time talking with New Yorkers, it’s this: we want a City that works. That means good jobs, housing that’s affordable, quality healthcare, strong schools, and safe communities. Democrats used to deliver on that. But these days our party leaders would rather fight culture wars and hand out purity tests. I'm running to restore the party’s focus on the basics—the things that make Democrats the real party of real people.

Why I’m Running

When I was a kid, the Democratic party worked hard to ensure that every New Yorker had a chance to secure their piece of the American dream. But today, New Yorkers just don’t believe that so much. It’s gotten so bad 50% of New Yorkers are considering leaving. Squeezed by the cost of living, scared of the streets and subways, silenced by the party machine, New Yorkers are telling me they’ve had it with politics as usual. I’m running to shake some sense into the Democratic Party and get back to the basics. More affordable housing. More money for public safety. A government that listens and puts people first. That’s what we want. And when New Yorkers want something, we !@#$% get it!

I want to hear what’s important to you.

Let’s Talk.
